My Wine Experience - Barbera

Grasping a bottle of wine off the shelf is never easy. For a safe choice of red, Barbera is definitely one of my favorites.

Barbera is an ancient grape variety with Italian origins. It has been known in Italy since at least the 13th century. Second to Sangiovese, it remains the second most-planted red wine grape in Italy.

The Barbera grape favours warmer climates. It is relatively high in acids, but low in tannins. It is consistent in providing good, and late ripening yields.

Within Italy, the Piedmont region is where the best Barbera grapes are grown, though such areas as Lombardy and Sardinia also produce a great deal.

Outside of Italy the Barbera grape variety is relatively popular in Slovenia, as well as in California and increasingly in Australia.

Gapsted Wines - Barbera 2006 (Red)
King Valley, Australia
HKD 210+

Nose: Fragrant and intense showing spice, red berry fruits and hints of vanilla.
Palate: A soft supple palate showing good concentration of sweet, ripe and plump black cherry fruit. Silky tannins and bright acidity, mingling with the vanillin oak provide the structure and the finish.

Its high acidicity along with a low tanin level makes it a good match with tomato, mushroom and herb based dishes.

My Wine Experience - Gewurztraminer

Taking Gewurztraminer is like going to a pub for a "One Night Stand". You won't be enjoying it on a regular basis. However, it is definitely tempting. Its exotic nature is so memorable.

Johanneshof Gewrztraminer 2008
Marlborough, New Zealand
HKD 298 (from Three Sixty @ Elements)

So far, Johanneshof is the best I ever have. It is quite off-sweet. Very strong nose and taste of Lychee. It won't be like rinsing your mouth in the ocean of syrup.

Leon Beyer Gewurztraminer 2007
Alsace, France
HKD 205 (from Wine Castle, Kornhill)

Leon Beyer is another interesting option. It is off-dry with crispness to balance out the hatred of sweetiness. Strong nose of Lychee. But, tastes like crispy Riesling from Alsace.

Paul & Philippe Zinck Gewurztraminer 2007
Alsace, France
HKD 220 (from Three Sixty @ Elements)

This one is so-so. If you like something sweeter with reasonable nose of Lychee, it could be your angel.

Joseph Cattin Gewurztraminer 2007
Alsace, France
HKD 180 (from Impression Gallery, Cheung Sha Wan Plaza)

I won't recommend you in trying the Joseph Cattin. It tastes like Aurther Metz. It is too sweet. A bit bitter on the finish. A strange option.

Escada Goes Bankrupt?

Escada was once one of the biggest fashion houses in the world. However, its popularity and earnings were kept declining in recent years.

After the Group loss after taxes amounted to -70.3 million euros in fiscal 2007/2008 and failed to execute a rescue plan in the earlier time, insolvency became inevitable. Escada AG had filed for bankruptcy on 13th August, 2009

At the moment, ESCADA AG's national and international subsidiaries are not initially affected by the insolvency of the parent company.
